Police gears and uniforms in the United Kingdom have evolved over time. Compared to the early mainstream police uniforms and gears in the 19th century, many of the changes that we have today were shaped by tons of laws and regulations that have been passed from the mid-19th century till date. Policing in the UK have become more standardized with the uniforms and gears following a similar path.

Police gears and uniform in the UK have evolved from home grown uniforms, bicycles, swords, and pistols to highly sophisticated gears and rides. In terms of their look, they have also moved away from their traditional long coat and top hat to a more recognizable modern uniform of a white shirt, black tie, reflective jackets, body armor, and the battenburg car. Today, we see police officers in the UK with high-tech gadgets, Airwave Solutions radios, electric vehicles and tasers. It is an improvement that we all love to see.

Today, there are several items that you would find in the duty belt of a uniformed police officer in the UK. Many of them often carry an ASP or Monadnock baton, extendable or collapsible baton, Motorola or Sepura personal radio, and CS/PAVA incapacitant spray. You would also find the basic items such as the regular police notebook, pens, and smartphones. These would come in handy when trying to access the PNC, issuing tickets, and taking statements.

Let’s not forget the need for a good-old torch, as well as restraint gears like leg restraints and TCH rigid cuffs. You might also find X26/X2 taser. Although they were initially meant for specially trained officers, they are becoming more routinely issued in a few forces today. One other equipment that you might find in a patrol car include a first aid kit.
