As much as a straightforward “YES” would get this over with, there are still certain things that you need to know before carrying on with your day. So, read this till the end.
For starters, do not begin to build houses in clouds with the thought of purchasing an all-powerful man-of-steel rated tactical helmet that can keep all kinds of bullets away from your cranium. There is no impenetrable helmet, it just has not been hit by the right bullet. However, there are rifle rated tactical helmets that can hold well against rifle rounds and other lesser ballistic threats. These are the Level IV rated tactical helmets. However, there is one major issue – weight!
It is a common knowledge that ballistic gears providing better protection are more likely to weigh much more than the those that offer lesser protection. This would mean that a Level IV tactical helmet will be too heavy for the head. And what is the use of an ultimate protection helmet that can’t be worn for an extended period of time?
A good example is the Level IV body armor. Today, they offer the highest level of ballistic rated protection against all kinds of rifle rounds, as well as large projectiles. However, their weight is simply unbearable.
How long can you keep a ballistic helmet weighing around 15 lbs on your head? Not for long I presume. Due to their extra protection, they would have to be made from thick materials that can add to the weight. And all of these is without considering the additional weight of helmet accessories.
Luckily, there have been news of some manufacturers trying to develop light weighted rifle rated ballistic materials. When these materials are produced and vetted by the NIJ, they would be available for use and wearer would not have to bear the burdensome weight of heavy-duty Level IV helmets.
